You may not know this but pride is a sin we all commit. When you think of pride, what pops into your head? I think of someone that is very into themselves and thinks they are better then everyone. But in reality, there are two forms of pride. The Bible or word of God tells us that it is okay to be prideful in terms of encouragement and to take pride in the good works of God and his creations. Pride becomes a sin when we decide to take encouragement and pride and revolve it around ourselves. Still wondering what sinful pride is? Pride can be extremely obvious or something we do not realize. It is the high opinion of one’s own dignity, importance to the world and superiority whether in our minds or out on display. When we crave attention, entertain critical thoughts of ourselves or fear who we are, we are being prideful. I know every day I talk about my lower stomach not being flat and compare myself to other women that I deem more beautiful. What we all need to realize is that God made us in his image (Genesis 1:27). We need praise the Lord for his love and faith. We need to praise the Lord for our enteral life. I want to hit on 4 main points about pride: what the bible says about pride, what causes pride, who struggled with pride and how we can recognize and change. Of course, I will end with a prayer we can all say together.

WHAT DOES THE BIBLE SAY ABOUT PRIDE?

“To fear the lord is to hate evil; I hate arrogant pride, evil conduct and perverse speech.” (Proverbs 8:13). We all need to fear the Lord because one day we will stand before him on judgement day. Fear the Lord and hate pride or be okay with the Lord and sin. I like the first option. One scripture that was always brought up as I dove deeper into pride was Psalms 10:4 but I am not going to quote that scripture because I think Psalms 10 needs to be read in whole to understand the wicked. Pride is wicked.

Need for God’s Justice

Lord, why do you stand so far away?
Why do you hide in times of trouble?
In arrogance the wicked relentlessly pursue their victims;
let them be caught in the schemes they have devised.

For the wicked one boasts about his own cravings;
the one who is greedy curses and despises the Lord.
In all his scheming,
the wicked person arrogantly thinks,
“There’s no accountability,
since there’s no God.”
His ways are always secure;
your lofty judgments have no effect on him;
he scoffs at all his adversaries.
He says to himself, “I will never be moved—
from generation to generation without calamity.”
Cursing, deceit, and violence fill his mouth;
trouble and malice are under his tongue.
He waits in ambush near settlements;
he kills the innocent in secret places.
His eyes are on the lookout for the helpless;
he lurks in secret like a lion in a thicket.
He lurks in order to seize a victim;
he seizes a victim and drags him in his net.
10 So he is oppressed and beaten down;
helpless people fall because of the wicked one’s strength.
11 He says to himself, “God has forgotten;
he hides his face and will never see.”

12 Rise up, Lord God! Lift up your hand.
Do not forget the oppressed.
13 Why has the wicked person despised God?
He says to himself, “You will not demand an account.”
14 But you yourself have seen trouble and grief,
observing it in order to take the matter into your hands.
The helpless one entrusts himself to you;
you are a helper of the fatherless.
15 Break the arm of the wicked, evil person,
until you look for his wickedness,
but it can’t be found.

16 The Lord is King forever and ever;
the nations will perish from his land.
17 Lord, you have heard the desire of the humble;
you will strengthen their hearts.
You will listen carefully,
18 doing justice for the fatherless and the oppressed
so that mere humans from the earth may terrify them no more.

The whole scripture above speaks of pride. He did not believe in God nor religion. If you do not believe, then why stay humble in faith and not become prideful. Prideful humans do not aim for the glory of God. They do not submit to his will and follow his word. The prideful glorify themselves, their power and their successes. They have lies, violence and cursing that come from their mouths and trouble and malice under their tongue and the Lord does not want that from us. We all do it but we need to pray and repent and ask for forgiveness. The prideful man or woman listens to the enemy and is not seeking the Lord. We need to commit to him and humbly trust his mercy. The Lord ,and the Lord alone, can rescue the believer. He can break the arm of every wicked man or woman and oppress the enemy under our feet. 1 Corinthians 10:12-13 sums it up best, “So, whoever thinks he stands must be careful not to fall. No temptation has come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful; he will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation he will also provide a way out so that you may be able to bear it.” Pray, repent and be humble. Pride is the heart of bullying and entitlement. Pride can and will leave a candy trail to destruction. Take the right advice that I am telling and not thrive to be wicked and powerful. One of the Ten Commandments is to love God above all else. When we pride we are not loving him above all else. We are so quick to see pride in others but guys, its time to see the pride in ourselves. Let me ask one questions for you to ponder on, how are you prideful?

WHAT CAUSES PRIDE?

Pride raises its ugly head when we lose control of situations and life, when we take our lives out of the hands of God. As I was reading, it was said that the sinful nature of pride can take manifest in self-reliance, self-centeredness and self-condemnation. All 3 of those characteristics define pride. There is a difference between being proud of someone and having pride in yourself. When people witnessed who Jesus was, it led them to believe in him. We need to live by faith and not by sight. We should not need to see the wrath of pride or the humbleness in prayer to know that we need to live by the word of God. “But as for me, I will never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. The world has been crucified to me through the cross, and I to the world.” (Galatians 6:14). Use pride in place of boast. I will never be prideful about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Let’s follow that verse and believe its truth. When we sin in pride, we attempt to be God. Wow, when you say that in those words, that’s powerful. One of the enemy’s greatest deceits it allowing use to think we are better or our image in not enough because then we are turning our heart away for the Lord. We were created equally and we are created in his image. Remember that.

WHO STRUGGLED WITH PRIDE

I wanted to point out this short bullet point section to give you something to read into and understand that even the people in the bible sinned in pride.

  1. Adam and Eve – there prideful behavior led to the downfall of humanity. They believed Satan and his lie that they would be able to see good from evil as God. (Genesis 3)
  2. King David: He trusted an army of Israelites more than he trusted in God.
  3. King Uzziah: He was cursed with leprosy because he let power get to his head and decided he could out rank the priest
  4. Herod, King Hezekiah and many more let pride lead to their downfall.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE PRIDE

 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your graciousness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:4-7)

Faith, a gift from God, kills pride. That’s why we need to live by faith. The emotion of fear and anger are pride. Hypocrites and being entitled are pride. A people pleaser is a prideful human. When we pray and live by Gods word, we will be convicted by the Holy Spirit. We will become sanctified and we will be free. We need to use our senses and listen to the Lord and then shall we recognize pride.

HEALING AND PRAYING

Of course, I could never leave you with out the section of prayer and healing. Ask the Lord in prayer to remove the pride in your life. Read the word and live by the scriptures. Be obedient to what he says. Have godly connections. People are placed in our lives on purpose. Continue the walk with them or help them find the word of God. Repeat all this to live a humble and faithful life. Just as pride is daily, faith is daily. We need to live by faith and make our choices in faith.

Repeat after me,

Father,

Allow my pride to be in you. Remove the sinful pride from my life and allow me to submit my life to you. Hold me accountable to my actions and to remember that I need to lean on you and learn from you.  Protect me from the destructive path of pride. Let me share you with others and free them from sinful pride. Allow me to show them the faithful and humble life you provide. Let us boast in you and only your doings.

In Jesus name,

Amen!

Or in the words of a good friend, “TTYL Jesus!”
